Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) worldwide. In most cases (more than 80%), people do not show symptoms and can unknowingly spread the infection. In women, untreated chlamydia can lead to serious health problems such as pelvic inflammatory disease (a major cause of infertility), ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain. It also increases the risk of HIV infection, while in men it may cause urethritis and epididymitis.
Because current prevention methods (like using condoms and sexual education) have limited effectiveness in real-life settings, there is a need for a vaccine that can protect people against chlamydia infection.
