Respiratory Illnesses
Dr. Munro Neville, Medical Director at Momentum Clinical Research, appeared on Channel 7 Sydney to discuss the surge in respiratory illnesses gripping Australia this winter. With COVID-19, influenza, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) all circulating simultaneously, Australia’s healthcare system faces mounting pressure as cases are expected to increase over the next two months.
The heightened risk is particularly concerning for individuals with chronic illnesses, such as Type 2 Diabetes or asthma, who are more susceptible to severe respiratory complications. Additionally, those in public-facing roles, including healthcare workers, teachers, early childhood educators, and airline crew, are at an increased risk of exposure, making prevention strategies even more critical.
Momentum Clinical Research are currently recruiting participants for a clinical study aimed at evaluating whether an existing RSV vaccine, currently approved for older adults, could also offer protection to other high-risk groups, including younger adults with chronic health conditions. This trial is being conducted at three Momentum Clinical Research locations: St Leonards Sydney, Sunshine Melbourne, and Wellers Hill Brisbane.
Eligible participants aged 18 to 49 and living with conditions such as asthma, Type 2 Diabetes, or other chronic illnesses will receive a free RSV vaccine as part of the study. The trial process is straightforward, involving just one shot and two clinic visits, with no blood collection required.
As the Australian healthcare system braces for the seasonal uptick in respiratory illnesses, Momentum Clinical Research remains committed to supporting critical research and preventive measures, working to protect at-risk populations through innovative clinical studies like this one.
